El mismo hace referencia a las grav\u00edsimas consecuencias que se dar\u00edan a ra\u00edz de su posible desaparici\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Ubicado en la Ant\u00e1rtida occidental y con 128 kil\u00f3metros cuadrados, es considerado como el glaciar mas ancho del mundo, por lo que la atenci\u00f3n de los cient\u00edficos esta constantemente puesta en el r\u00e1pido deshielo que experimenta el glaciar debido al aumento de las temperaturas por el calentamiento global y al agua tibia que se est\u00e1 filtrando a trav\u00e9s de sus grietas.<\/p>\n<p>Se estima que si esta regi\u00f3n de la ant\u00e1rtica se derritiera por completo, el nivel del mar a nivel mundial llegar\u00eda a unos 65 cent\u00edmetros m\u00e1s. Al mismo tiempo, otros autores sugieren que el aumento del nivel ser\u00eda de hasta 3 metros teniendo en cuenta el desequilibrio que causar\u00eda su total derretimiento en el sistema ant\u00e1rtico.<\/p>\n<p>Los cient\u00edficos est\u00e1n de acuerdo en que el aceleramiento de su deshielo sucedi\u00f3 a partir de los a\u00f1os 70, sin embargo hasta ahora no hab\u00edan podido determinar cuando empez\u00f3 realmente ese declive.<\/p>\n<p>Un equipo de investigadores de la Universidad de Houston (EEUU)\u00a0 revel\u00f3 el lunes en la revista <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Science<\/em> (PNAS), que el glaciar empez\u00f3 a registrar un derretimiento progresivo desde la d\u00e9cada del 1940, al mismo tiempo que empez\u00f3 el declive de otro de los glaciares mas importantes de la Ant\u00e1rtida, el glaciar Isla Pine. Rachel Clark, coautora de la investigaci\u00f3n, expres\u00f3 que \u00a0lo que es especialmente importante del estudio es que este cambio no es ni aleatorio ni espec\u00edfico de un glaciar y que este forma parte de un contexto m\u00e1s amplio de clima cambiante.<\/p>\n<p>Si bien la evoluci\u00f3n de los glaciares se monitorea continuamente por sat\u00e9lites de teledetecci\u00f3n, estos solo empezaron a funcionar hace algunas d\u00e9cadas, por lo que para la investigaci\u00f3n se tomaron muestras de sedimentos marinos de la zona a principios del a\u00f1o 2019 lo que les permiti\u00f3 reconstruir la historia geol\u00f3gica del glaciar desde hace unos 11.000 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abEl hallazgo de que tanto el glaciar Thwaites como el Isla Pine comparten una historia com\u00fan de adelgazamiento y retroceso corrobora la teor\u00eda de quela p\u00e9rdida de hielo en el sector del mar de Amundsen\u00a0de la capa de hielo de la Ant\u00e1rtida occidental\u00a0est\u00e1 controlada predominantemente por factores externos, que implican cambios en la circulaci\u00f3n oce\u00e1nica y atmosf\u00e9rica, y no por la din\u00e1mica interna del glaciar o los cambios locales, como el derretimiento en el lecho del glaciar o la acumulaci\u00f3n de nieve en su superficie\u00bb declar\u00f3 Claus Dieter Hillenbrand, coautor del estudio.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/e00-elmundo.uecdn.es\/assets\/multimedia\/imagenes\/2024\/02\/26\/17089515655961.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1440\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">El glaciar Thwaites &#8211; sat\u00e9lite Sentinel-2<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>El glaciar juega un papel vital ya que juega un papel vital en el equilibrio y la regulaci\u00f3n de la capa de hielo de la Ant\u00e1rtida occidental y el aumento del mar ya que el mismo funciona como retenci\u00f3n de de una masa mucho mas amplia de hielo detr\u00e1s de el.<\/p>\n<p>La pen\u00ednsula ant\u00e1rtica es una de las zonas del planeta en las que se est\u00e1 registrando un mayor calentamiento, con casi tres grados de aumento de la temperatura en los \u00faltimos 50 a\u00f1os. El 6 de febrero de 2020 se bati\u00f3 el r\u00e9cord de temperatura m\u00e1xima en ese continente al registrarse 18,3 grados Celsius en la estaci\u00f3n de Esperanza (Argentina).<\/p>\n<div
