Una investigaci\u00f3n internacional advierte que el aumento de las temperaturas y el retroceso del hielo est\u00e1n favoreciendo la movilizaci\u00f3n de este metal t\u00f3xico hacia el oc\u00e9ano Austral y la atm\u00f3sfera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">El estudio, liderado por investigadores de la Universidad de Pek\u00edn y publicado en la revista cient\u00edfica PNAS, se\u00f1ala que la Pen\u00ednsula Ant\u00e1rtica acumula mercurio a un ritmo aproximadamente dos veces superior al promedio registrado en otras plataformas continentales. Desde el comienzo de la industrializaci\u00f3n, la acumulaci\u00f3n de este contaminante en la regi\u00f3n aument\u00f3 cerca de un 160%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Los cient\u00edficos explican que el calentamiento est\u00e1 provocando dos procesos simult\u00e1neos. Por un lado, la reducci\u00f3n de la superficie cubierta por hielo permite una mayor interacci\u00f3n entre el oc\u00e9ano y el mercurio presente en la atm\u00f3sfera. Por otro, el deshielo y la erosi\u00f3n liberan el mercurio que permaneci\u00f3 almacenado durante a\u00f1os en el hielo y los sedimentos, transport\u00e1ndolo posteriormente hacia el mar.<\/p>\n<p>La principal preocupaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 relacionada con los efectos sobre los ecosistemas marinos. El mercurio puede transformarse en compuestos altamente t\u00f3xicos y acumularse en los organismos, avanzando por la cadena alimentaria desde especies peque\u00f1as hasta grandes depredadores.
